My mother is extremely creative, especially when it comes to flower arrangements and setting up dining tables and making them look simple yet pretty. She figures unusual things out too – like the secret to lasting hydrangea arrangements. She’s like a Martha Stewart. I’m lucky she has taught me how to do many of the creative things she’s good at.
I’m not sure how she figured this one out but the way you make hydrangea arrangements last longer is by filling your vase with ice rather than water. I’m going to show you in a series of pictures how I made two arrangements with hydrangeas & ivy taken from the yard with bouquets of Alstroemerias and baby roses from Trader Joes. I also used some rocks for extra appeal and to cover the stems.
Step 1:
Unpackage your flowers and lay them out. Gather greens from the yard. They are great to use as filler. Get your vases together. I used 2 square vases from Target. You also need good clippers for cutting the stems and leaves.
Step 2:
Cut down the stems and remove all the leaves from the stems otherwise it looks messy. Removing the leaves, gives the arrangement a much cleaner look.
Step 3:
Answer to the secret to lasting hydrangea arrangements – fill vases with ice. Hydrangeas are beautiful but they always seem to die too soon. Without question, the ice will prolong the life of your hydrangeas.Use the ivy to intertwine around the bottom. It will cover the stems and hold flowers in place. You can also see rocks were put in the bottom to help cover the stems.
Step 4:
Put the hydrangeas in the vases. Stick stems in between the intertwined ivy and rocks to help the hydrangeas stay in place.
Step 5:
Add remaining flowers to the hydrangea arrangements. I fed baby pink roses and alstroemeria flowers throughout and in between the hydrangeas to add a little color.
There you have two beautiful flower arrangements and the answer to the secret to lasting hydrangea arrangements. Remember to fill your vases with lots of ice.
The second part of this post I will quickly show you how I put together a simple dining table. This was for a little Birthday dinner we had for Sophia with family the night before her Birthday party with friends.
Step 1:
I used plain white plates, dark brown basket woven chargers, matchstick placemats, & bamboo silverware (all from target except for the white dishes. You can get cute white dishes at Target or on Amazon or dozens of other places).
Step 2:
Place your flower arrangements on the table – one at each end. Keep your plates, silverware, glasses, etc. simple. Use your flowers for color and to spice up the table. Anything more is too much.
Step 3:
My step 3 was to iron the napkins, fold them and place them on the plates.
Step 4:
My step 4 was to set up a little table for the kids. I also made a small flower arrangement for their table.
Flowers make everything look prettier!
So you learned the secret to lasting hydrangea arrangements – don’t forget to use a lot of ice. And now that you have seen the pictures of my simple dining table, you can copy it if you like it. Let me know what you think and how it goes.
